St Margaret's washes up well at the 2011 Rowing Nationals
13 March 2011
Current and past students from St Margaret's Anglican Girls School left rivals in their wake at the 2011 Australian Rowing Championships held in West Lakes, South Australia, from 7 to 13 March.
Four St Margaret's Old Girls and one current student were among the competition at the event, returning home weighed down with titles they had fought hard for.
Past students Sally Kehoe, Hannah O’Loughlin and Elizabeth Salisbury made up one third of the Queensland Women’s VIII, and brought home a silver medal.
Madeleine Edmunds competed in several Under 23 divisions, as well as the Queensland Women’s Youth VIII, which took out the gold.
This is the third year in a row that Madeleine has competed in and won the event.
The women also rated well in other races, Sally picking up a bronze medal in the hotly contended Open Women’s Single Scull, and Madeleine a bronze in the Under 23 division for the same event.
Their total medal haul includes two medals for Elizabeth, three for Hannah, four for Madeleine and a whopping six for Sally, three of them gold.
Current Year 12 student Jacinta Edmunds scored a bronze medal alongside her partner in the Under 19 Women’s Pair, and placed 16th overall in the Schoolgirl Single Scull.
“Preparing for Nationals meant that I had to train after the school season,” said Jacinta.
“I found the experience really enjoyable and fun, as I got to row with new people and catch up with lots of friends, as well as enjoy the competition,” she said.
Head of Rowing at St Margaret’s, Jonathon Voller, congratulated the women for their achievements.
“These are some great results for the Old Girls as well as Jacinta who had spent almost no time in the pair until the week of the Nationals,” said Mr Voller.
“It is a fantastic result, and the girls should be commended for their hard work and dedication,” he said.
