NAPLAN Data on My School website
St Margaret's students' performance on 2010 National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) has again been well above the national average in all areas and across all year levels.
The results of the 2010 NAPLAN test for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students were released last year, however, appear on the My School website - Version 2 today.
We are proud of our students' results and feel they reflect earnest young people committed to achieving their potential. The strong performance of St Margaret's students highlights the excellent work of teachers and students. For the first time, student improvement is illustrated showing changes from Years 3-5, 5-7 and 7-9 for students who were at St Margaret's across these years. We are delighted to see illustrated what we know as teachers; as a school we add significant value to our students' academic performance, while continuing to offer specialist subjects including Languages, Music, Art, Drama and a 1-1 laptop program from Years 8-12.
The My School site also shows St Margaret's Seniors in 2010 achieved close to a 100% outcome in the award of Senior Secondary Certificates.
However, we should remember that NAPLAN is a test, like other tests, that captures just one point in time out of an entire school year and doesn't provide a comprehensive picture of a school's academic or holistic performance.
St Margaret's continues to support the principle of transparency, which is the idea behind publishing NAPLAN and other academic results and measures in environments like the My School website. The School has always been open and transparent in relation to student results and achievements providing details about students' results on the school's website.
Financial Data
Updated data has also been made available on the site in relation to the School's funding. These figures show in reality, for the 2009 financial year, St Margaret's government funding was only 24% - meaning that our parents and other sources contribute 76% of our recurrent income primarily through tuition fees and levies.
On average, Queensland independent schools receive 50% of their income from private sources such as tuition fees, 36% from the Australian Government and 14% from the State Government. So these figures illustrate the inequity St Margaret's faces with the current funding model.
The data for all schools in Queensland has revealed that the average net recurrent funding per student was highest in government schools ($14,808) and $12,306 in independent schools, clearly challenging the myth about all independent schools being overfunded.
Be reminded the My School website is just one source of information on the performance of Australian schools. At St Margaret's, we are continuously seeking new ways to ensure our students are provided with excellent education opportunities.
