Outstanding Results at the 2010 Schools Knockout National Final and All Schools Competition
It's a knockout at SKO 2010!
Over 500 high school students from around Australia have competed in the 2010 Schools Knockout National Final at Reischeicks Reserve in Doncaster, Vic, bringing an end to three days of hard-fought action at the track.
The high standards set at the Australian All Schools Championships across the weekend continued in Doncaster, where 64 teams battled it out across four divisions for success on the national stage.
The Schools Knockout program is a team competition for schools across Australia. The schools participate in rounds at Regional level, with the winners progressing to the State/Territory Final. The winners and second placed teams from the State/Territory Final are then invited to compete at the National Final, which is held in conjunction with the All Schools competition in December.
The most exciting thing about this competition is it takes a predominately single participant sport and transfers it into a team-oriented competition.
The 2010 Schools Knockout National Final sees the top 16 teams in each category from around Australia compete for the title of National Champion across nine track and field events. All teams who competed in the National Final earned their place in the deciding round after ‘knocking out' fellow teams from their home state to rank in the top 16 teams nationwide.
St Margaret's finished 2nd in the Senior Girls Division, 13 points behind eventual winners, Caulfield Grammar (VIC), after leading through the first 6 of 9 events and a clear 41 points ahead of 3rd place, Haileybury College (VIC).
The St Margaret's team consisted of:
Kaitlyn McCall (1st Shot Put - 11.82m and 5th Javelin - 35.16m)
Holly Hoskins (2nd 400m - 58.16m and 5th 1500m - 4:51.96)
Kate Savage (2nd 100m Hurdles - 15.49 and 4th Long Jump - 5.23m)
Harriet Adsett (2nd High Jump - 1.63m)
Alison Prowse (12th 100m - 13.40 and 12th 400m - 61.63)
Sophie Malowiecki (4th 1500m - 4:51.59)
Winifred Parker (26th 100m - 13.81)
The Distance Medley Relay team (Winifred Parker - 200m, Harriet Adsett - 200m, Alison Prowse - 400m and Holly Hoskins 800m) finished 3rd in a time of 4:18.06.
All of the girls were ably assisted by our reserves Emily Covington, Phoebe Giffard and Isabella Smith.
Eric Brown has worked very hard with all of the girls in getting them to this level and without his determination, dedication and experience we would never have made it this far.
The 2010 Schools Knockout National Final marked the end of an action-packed three days at Reischeicks Reserve, which saw the next generation of athletic talent strut its stuff on the track and in the field in a show of what's to come on the national athletics scene in the years ahead.
