Date: 6 July 2010

Students from St Margaret's Anglican Girls School have already achieved considerable success in a range of endeavours during Semester 1, demonstrating their commitment to excellence.

Year 9 and Year 10 girls emerged as one of the winning teams in this year's Brisbane North Science and Engineering Challenge at The University of Queensland. The four day event saw teams compete in challenges including cracking encryption data, building an eco model house to withstand extreme weather and building a vehicle to cope with rocky terrain like on Mars. Along with teams from three other schools, the St Margaret's girls will compete in the Queensland Super Challenge Series in August.

Girls in Years 8 and 9 Humanities and Years 10-12 Geography challenged their Geographical skills and knowledge in the annual National Geographic Channel Australia Geography Competition. The questions focussed on general knowledge, understanding of the world and its environments and interpretation of graphs, maps and photos. This year, over 85,000 students from 816 schools across Australian participated in the competition. St Margaret's girls achieved excellent results, with almost 30% of students achieving a Credit or higher. High Distinctions were received by 12 girls from St Margaret's.

Chamber Strings competed in the String Orchestra section of the Queensland Youth Music Awards. The girls gave a wonderful performance and were placed first in the event, winning the QYMA Schools Contest Trophy and a cash prize. Encorah also participated in the QYMA, competing in the sections for choirs up to 30 voices and for over 30 voices. They were successful in winning both of the choral competitions. These awards place St Margaret's musicians in the strings and vocal fields at the top of the performance scale in Queensland. The music students in the Secondary School are eagerly looking forward to their tour to France and Italy over the holiday period.

In the QGSSSA Swimming competition, the St Margaret's team received the Percentage Cup for the sixth year in a row. This followed a win at the Anglican Schools Swimming Carnival. It was an exciting event and it was inspirational to see the positive and supportive nature of our students, staff, parents and supporters.

The Secondary Cross Country team also achieved success by receiving the Percentage Trophy in the QGSSSA Cross Country Carnival at Limestone Park. This is the ninth year that St Margaret's has received the Percentage Trophy, a tribute to the commitment and talent of the girls in the Cross Country Team.

The 2010 Lifesaving season culminated in St Margaret's winning the Sheena Dyason Shield for Champion Girls School for the seventh year running, following their successful participation in the Queensland Secondary Schools Lifesaving Competition. The team was also placed a close second in the overall championship.

This year continues to be another successful year for the girls at St Margaret's.
