Teaching and Learning > Primary School > Core Plus Cluster Program
“The Cluster Science Program at St Margaret’s is developing into one of the best I’ve seen. Not only is it differentiated, but it is pushing educational boundaries through what is presented to the students, and through how it is presented ensuring student understanding.”
Dr Gillian Kidman, Lecturer in Science Education QUT
At St Margaret’s, we are committed to developing learning opportunities and programs that cater to the individual needs of students.
The Core Plus Cluster Learning and Teaching Program is comprised of two components. The Core Program is taught to students in their particular year level and dominates the classroom timetable. The Cluster Program is taught to the students for approximately 30% of the time. Students participate in vertical groupings of P-3, 4/5 and 6/7.
Year Level teachers are assigned as Cluster Teachers for their year level cluster. This allows teachers and students to build long term associations through each two/three year Cluster Program. It is believed that student achievement, personal development and group citizenship will improve when pursued in the context of such long term associations.
The purposes for cluster groupings evolve as students progress through the developmental stages. In P-3, clusters are determined by interest, social and emotional needs. In 4/5 and 6/7 groups, clusters are determined by academic ability, prior knowledge and interest. The social and emotional dynamic is also an important factor. These groupings also match the mandated SYLLABUS levels.
The P-3 Cluster is a time for experiencing and learning with others, and taking increasing responsibility in a guided and supportive environment. It is a major aim of the P-3 Cluster to provide experiences that develop students’ social competencies.
Students move from the learning stage towards the practice of applying their learning. Within the group there is a broad range of abilities and the Cluster Program has enabled teachers to address these individual learning needs.
A reflection of middle school philosophy and a foundation for transition into the Secondary School, this Cluster focuses on independence and leadership activities.
To ensure the learning needs of individual students are maximised, Cluster class sizes vary from groupings of 10 to a maximum of 22 and teaching styles are adjusted accordingly.

The different KLAs are connected to provide a purposeful context for learning. These units are focused on higher order thinking and open ended problem solving.
Each of the integrated units in Clusters are supported by a Wider Reading Program within Core Classes. The Wider Reading Program supports students in their contextual understanding of concepts explored in Cluster units of work.
There are many opportunities for students to participate in social interactions in Cluster groups.
