St Margaret's School

The Advent Centre provides a learning environment for Pre-Prep children. With provisions to provide for twenty students, both boys and girls, who turn 4 years old by 30 June.

During Term time, two staff members care for the students Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 2:15pm. After 2:30, care for Pre-Prep students can be arranged until 6pm.

The Advent Centre is licensed under the Child Care Act 2002. The Centre must comply with the Act and Childcare regulation 2003 including; requirements about activities, experiences and programs, the numbers of staff members and children, and staff qualifications.

The curriculum is developed by the qualified early childhood staff members, lead by the Teacher. The educational program aims to extend each child to reach his or her potential by creating a stimulating learning environment. Learning experiences are planned to develop the interests of the children.

The Goals of Pre-Prep

To create and maintain a warm cooperative atmosphere, where staff and children, in cooperation with parents, are happily engaged in developing the abilities and skills of the children.

To provide children with his/her first formal educational experience.

To offer a variety of activities including stories, music, art and craft, science and mathematics that will encourage participation, exploration, and experimentation.

Within a happy, stimulating environment, staff will endeavour to develop the following attributes in each child:

  • Self confidence and a feeling of adequacy
  • Independence
  • Good interpersonal relationships
  • The acceptance of group rules
  • The ability to make appropriate decisions
  • The ability to contribute to a group
  • Skills with hands and body
  • The ability to observe, question, evaluate and organise their ideas
  • An eagerness for new experiences
  • Self expression through speech, movement, music and craft
  • The preliminary steps leading to reading, writing and simple mathematical concepts
  • To keep abreast with current trends and childcare regulations.
  • To develop all staff through regular professional development opportunities.
  • To treat all children equally and within this, communicate with children in a manner that maintains their dignity and self respect.
