About the new Eunice Science and Resource Centre
With its grand heritage buildings and enviable position overlooking the Brisbane River and CBD, St Margaret's is well known as one of the most stunning school campuses in Queensland.
The gentle beauty of the historic buildings is a daily reminder of the school's foundations and the continuing influence of the Sisters of the Society of the Sacred Advent. St Margaret's is proud of its heritage, and justly so.
Yet the uniqueness of its position and architecture brings with it equally unique development challenges. How do you apply modern teaching practices within older buildings?
The new Science and Resource Centre answers this question.
It's worth knowing what we have, in order to truly appreciate what we will receive.
St Margaret's current library and science facilities pre-date the 1970s. Not all new technology can be retrofitted to the smaller spaces of old architecture, which means existing classrooms cannot simply be renovated to meet the standards of modern science classrooms.
Presently, only five of the six science labs can be used due to space and safety limitations and they are scattered throughout the school. This new centre will not only increase the number of labs available but will provide the opportunity to create purpose-driven learning, with greater staffing and resources efficiencies.
Foremost of concern, however, is the quiet revolution that has transformed education. Teaching practices are dramatically different to 40 years ago and, as a leader in its field, St Margaret's has this opportunity to create 21st century learning space. St Margaret's, as a premier independent girls' school, must embrace the change to modern science facilities.
